Objective: This study aimed to explore the prevalence and risk factors of early postoperative seizures in patients with glioma through meta-analysis. Methods: Case-control studies and cohort studies on the prevalence and risk factors of early postoperative seizures in glioma patients were retrieved from various databases including CNKI, Wanfang, VIP, PubMed, Embase, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science, and the retrieval deadline for the data was 1 April 2023. Stata15.0 was used to analyze the data. Results: This review included 11 studies consisting of 488 patients with early postoperative seizures and 2,051 patients without early postoperative seizures. The research findings suggest that the prevalence of glioma is complicated by seizures (ES = 19%, 95% confidence interval [CI] [14%-25%]). The results also indicated a history of seizures (RR = 1.94, 95% CI [1.76, 2.14], P = 0.001), preoperative dyskinesia (RR = 3.13, 95% CI [1.20, 8.15], P = 0.02), frontal lobe tumor (RR = 1.45, 95% CI [1.16, 1.83], P = 0.001), pathological grade ≤2 (RR = 1.74, 95% CI [1.13, 2.67], P = 0.012), tumor≥ 3 cm (RR = 1.70, 95% CI [1.18, 2.45], P = 0.005), tumor resection (RR = 1.60, 95% CI [1.36, 1.88], P = 0.001), tumor edema ≥ 2 cm (RR = 1.77, 95% CI [1.40, 2.25], P = 0.001), and glioma cavity hemorrhage (RR=3.15, 95% CI [1.85, 5.37], P = 0.001). The multivariate analysis results showed that a history of seizures, dyskinesia, tumor ≥3 cm, peritumoral edema ≥2 cm, and glioma cavity hemorrhage were indicated as risk factors for glioma complicated with early postoperative seizures. Significance: Based on the existing evidence, seizure history, dyskinesia, frontal lobe tumor, pathological grade ≤2, tumor ≥3 cm, partial tumor resection, edema around tumor ≥2 cm, and glioma cavity hemorrhage are indicated as risk factors for glioma complicated with early postoperative seizures.

BACKGROUND: Blood shortage is a global challenge, impacting elective surgeries with high bleeding risk. Predicting intraoperative blood use, optimizing resource allocation, and ensuring safe elective surgery are vital. This study targets identifying key bleeding risk factors in Aortic Valve Replacement (AVR) through machine learning. METHODS: Data from 702 AVR patients were split into 70% training and 30% test sets. Thirteen models predicted RBC transfusion. SHapley Additive exPlanations (SHAP) analyzed risk factors. RESULTS: Logistic Regression excelled, with Area Under Curve (AUC) 0.872 and 81.0% accuracy on the test set. Notably, female gender, Hemoglobin (HGB) < 131.91 g/L, Hematocrit (HCT) < 0.41L/L, weight < 59.49 kg, age > 54.47 year, Mean Corpuscular Hemoglobin (MCH) < 29.15 pg, Total Protein (TP) > 69.7 g/L, FIB > 2.61 g/L, height < 160 cm, and type of operation is Surgical Aortic Valve Replacement (SAVR) were significant RBC transfusion predictors. CONCLUSIONS: The study's model accurately forecasts AVR-related RBC transfusions. This informs presurgery blood preparations, reducing resource waste and aiding clinicians in optimizing patient care.

BACKGROUND CONTEXT: Intervertebral disc degeneration is common and may play an important role in low back pain, but it is not well-understood. Previous studies have shown that the outer layer of the annulus fibrosus of a healthy disc is innervated by nociceptive nerve fibers. In the process of disc degeneration, it can grow into the inner annulus fibrosus or nucleus pulposus and release neuropeptides. Disc degeneration is associated with inflammation that produces inflammatory factors and potentiates nociceptor sensitization. Subsequently neurogenic inflammation is induced by neuropeptide release from activated primary afferent terminals. Because the innervation of a lumbar disc comes from multi-segmental dorsal root ganglion neurons, does neurogenic inflammation in a degenerative disc initiate neurogenic inflammation in neighboring healthy discs by antidromic activity? PURPOSE: This study was based on animal experiments in Sprague-Dawley rats to investigate the role of neurogenic inflammation in adjacent healthy disc degeneration induced by disc injury. STUDY DESIGN: This was an experimental study. METHODS: Seventy-five 12-week-old, male Sprague-Dawley rats were allocated to 3 groups (sham group, disc injury group and disc injury+TrkA antagonist group). The disc injury group was punctured in the tail disc between the eighth and ninth coccygeal vertebrae (Co8-9) to establish an animal model of tail intervertebral disc degeneration. The sham group underwent only skin puncture and the disc injury+TrkA antagonist group was intraperitoneally injected with GW441756 two days before disc puncture. The outcome measure included quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. RESULTS: Disc injury induced an increase in aggrecan, NGF, TrkA, CGRP, SP, IL-1ß, and IL-6 mRNA levels in the injured (Co8-9) and adjacent discs (Co7-8), which reached a peak on day 1, then gradually decreased, and returned to normal on day 14. After intraperitoneal injection of GW441756 prior to puncture, the mRNA levels of the above indicators were down-regulated in Co7-8 and Co8-9 intervertebral discs on the 1st and 7th days. The protein content of the above indicators in Co7-8 and Co8-9 intervertebral discs showed roughly the same trend as mRNA levels. CONCLUSIONS: Degeneration of one disc can induce neurogenic inflammation of adjacent healthy discs in a rat model. CLINICAL SIGNIFICANCE: This model supports a key role of neurogenic inflammation in disc degeneration, and may play a role in the experience of low back pain.

The rapid development of the Hospital Information System has significantly enhanced the convenience of medical research and the management of medical information. However, the internal misuse and privacy leakage of medical big data are critical issues that need to be addressed in the process of medical research and information management. Access control serves as a method to prevent data misuse and privacy leakage. Nevertheless, traditional access control methods, limited by their single usage scenario and susceptibility to single point failures, fail to adapt to the polymorphic, real-time, and sensitive characteristics of medical big data scenarios. This paper proposes a smart contracts and risk-based access control model (SCR-BAC). This model integrates smart contracts with traditional risk-based access control and deploys risk-based access control policies in the form of smart contracts into the blockchain, thereby ensuring the protection of medical data. The model categorizes risk into historical and current risk, quantifies the historical risk based on the time decay factor and the doctor's historical behavior, and updates the doctor's composite risk value in real time. The access control policy, based on the comprehensive risk, is deployed into the blockchain in the form of a smart contract. The distributed nature of the blockchain is utilized to automatically enforce access control, thereby resolving the issue of single point failures. Simulation experiments demonstrate that the access control model proposed in this paper effectively curbs the access behavior of malicious doctors to a certain extent and imposes a limiting effect on the internal abuse and privacy leakage of medical big data.

Temporal network embedding (TNE) has promoted the research of knowledge discovery and reasoning on networks. It aims to embed vertices of temporal networks into a low-dimensional vector space while preserving network structures and temporal properties. However, most existing methods have limitations in capturing dynamics over long distances, which makes it difficult to explore multihop topological associations among vertices. To tackle this challenge, we propose LongTNE, which learns the long-range dynamics of vertices to endow TNE with the ability to capture high-order proximity (HP) of networks. In LongTNE, we employ graph self-supervised learning (Graph SSL) to optimize the establishment probability of deep links in each network snapshot. We also present an accumulated forward update (AFU) module to fathom global temporal evolution among multiple network snapshots. The empirical results on six temporal networks demonstrate that, in addition to achieving state-of-the-art performance on network mining tasks, LongTNE can be handily extended to existing TNE methods.

Alkali and alkaline earth metal amides are a type of functional materials for hydrogen storage, thermal energy storage, ion conduction, and chemical transformations such as ammonia synthesis and decomposition. The thermal chemistry of lithium amide (LiNH2), as a simple but representative alkali or alkaline earth metal amide, has been well studied previously encouraged by its potentials in hydrogen storage. In comparison, little is known about the interaction of plasma and LiNH2. Herein, we report that the plasma treatment of LiNH2 in an Ar flow under ambient temperature and pressure gives rise to distinctly different reaction products and reaction pathway from that of the thermal process. We found that plasma treatment of LiNH2 leads to the formation of Li colloids, N2, and H2 as observed by UV-vis absorption, EPR, and gas products analysis. Inspired by this very unique interaction between plasma and LiNH2, a chemical loop for ammonia decomposition to N2 and H2 mediated by LiNH2 was proposed and demonstrated.

BACKGROUND: Bronchial arterial embolization (BAE) has been accepted as an effective treatment for bronchiectasis-related hemoptysis. However, rare clinical trials compare different sizes of specific embolic agents. This study aims to evaluate whether different Embosphere microsphere sizes change the outcome of BAE. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on consecutive patients with bronchiectatic hemoptysis who were scheduled to undergo BAE treatment during a period from January 2018 to December 2022. The patients received BAE using microspheres of different sizes: group A patients were treated with 500-750 µm microspheres, and group B patients were treated with 700-900 µm microspheres. The cost of embolic microspheres (Chinese Yuan, CNY), duration of hospitalization, complications, and hemoptysis-free survival were compared between patients in group A and those in group B. A Cox proportional hazards regression model was used to identify predictors of recurrent hemoptysis. RESULTS: Median follow-up was 30.2 months (range, 20.3-56.5 months). The final analysis included a total of 112 patients (49-77 years of age; 45 men). The patients were divided into two groups: group A (N = 68), which received 500-750 µm Embosphere microspheres, and group B (N = 44), which received 700-900 µm Embosphere microspheres. Except for the cost of embolic microspheres(group A,5314.8 + 1301.5 CNY; group B, 3644.5 + 1192.3 CNY; p = 0.042), there were no statistically significant differences in duration of hospitalization (group A,7.2 + 1.4 days; group B, 8 + 2.4days; p = 0.550), hemoptysis-free survival (group A, 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 85.9%, 75.8%, 62.9%; group B, 1-year, 2-year, 3-year, 88.4%, 81.2%,59.4%;P = 0.060), and complications(group A,26.5%; group B, 38.6%; p = 0.175) between the two groups. No major complications were observed. The multivariate analysis results revealed that the presence of cystic bronchiectasis (OR 1.61, 95% CI 1.12-2.83; P = 0.001) and systemic arterial-pulmonary shunts (SPSs) (OR 1.52, 95% CI 1.10-2.72; P = 0.028) were independent risk factors for recurrent bleeding. CONCLUSIONS: For the treatment of BAE in patients with bronchiectasis-related hemoptysis, 500-750 µm diameter Embosphere microspheres have a similar efficacy and safety profile compared to 700-900 µm diameter Embosphere microspheres, especially for those without SPSs or cystic bronchiectasis. Furthermore, the utilization of large-sized (700-900 µm) Embosphere microspheres is associated with the reduced cost of an embolic agent.

Background: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a common and life-threatening complication following pulmonary endarterectomy (PEA). Our study aimed to investigate the risk factors associated with AKI and evaluate the correlation between serum myoglobin (sMb) levels and postoperative AKI. Methods: We conducted a retrospective study involving 134 patients who underwent PEA at China-Japan Friendship Hospital. AKI was defined and staged according to the Kidney Disease Improving Global Outcomes (KDIGO) criteria. Results: During the study period, the incidence of postoperative AKI was 57.5%, and the associated mortality rate was 6.0%. Severe AKI was found to be significantly associated with worse short-term outcomes (P<0.05). Logarithmically transformed postoperative day (POD) 0 sMb levels were significantly associated with AKI [odds ratio (OR) =5.174; 95% confidence interval (CI), 2.307-11.603; P<0.001] and severe AKI (OR =4.605; 95% CI, 1.510-14.048; P=0.007), also had independent predictive value [area under the curve (AUC) =0.776 in AKI and AUC =0.737 in severe AKI]. The optimal cut-off values were 370.544 ng/mL for AKI and 419.473 ng/mL for severe AKI. Furthermore, albumin concentration was found to play a protective role in the development of severe AKI (OR =0.838; 95% CI, 0.716-0.980; P=0.027) when higher than 40.350 g/L. Conclusions: Our findings suggest that a high concentration of POD0 sMb may increase the risk of developing AKI following PEA surgery. Increasing albumin concentration could serve as an effective preventive measure against AKI.

Advancing a metal-free room temperature phosphorescent (RTP) material that exhibits multicolor emission, remarkable RTP lifetime, and high quantum yield still faces the challenge of achieving intersystem crossing between singly and triplet excited states, as well as the rapid decay of triplet excited states due to nonradiative losses. In this study, a novel strategy is proposed to address these limitations by incorporating o-phenylenediamine, which generates multiple luminescent centers, and long-chain polyacrylic acid to synthesize carbonized polymer dots (CPDs). These CPDs are then embedded in a rigid B2O3 matrix, effectively limiting nonradiative losses through the synergistic effects of polymer cross-linking and the rigid matrix. The resulting CPD-based materials exhibit remarkable ultralong phosphorescence in shades of blue and lime green, with a visible lifetime of up to 49 s and a high phosphorescence quantum yield. Simultaneously, this study demonstrates the practical applicability of these excellent material properties in anti-counterfeiting and information encryption.

Memristor possesses synapse-like properties that can mimic excitation and inhibition between neurons. This article introduces the Sigmoid functions to the memristor and constructs a new memristive Hopfield neural network (HNN). Its most distinctive feature is the simple topology, which contains only unidirectional connections in neurons. The equilibrium points analysis reveals the mechanism of its multiscroll attractors generation. Homogeneous and heterogeneous coexisting attractors are observed with the variation of the network parameters. Note that the state equation of memristor can affect the number of coexisting attractors. A hardware implementation is designed for it, and the multiscroll attractors are captured in the oscilloscope. Finally, it is also applied to developing an image encryption algorithm with excellent performance.

Scene Graph Generation (SGG) aims to detect all objects and identify their pairwise relationships in the scene. Recently, tremendous progress has been made in exploring better context relationship representations. Previous work mainly focuses on contextual information aggregation and uses de-biasing strategies on samples to eliminate the preference for head predicates. However, there remain challenges caused by indeterminate feature training. Overlooking the label confusion problem in feature training easily results in a messy feature distribution among the confused categories, thereby affecting the prediction of predicates. To alleviate the aforementioned problem, in this paper, we focus on enhancing predicate representation learning. Firstly, we propose a novel Adaptive Message Passing (AMP) network to dynamically conduct information propagation among neighbors. AMP provides discriminating representations for neighbor nodes under the view of de-noising and adaptive aggregation. Furthermore, we construct a feature-assisted training paradigm alongside the predicate classification branch, guiding predicate feature learning to the corresponding feature space. Moreover, to alleviate biased prediction caused by the long-tailed class distribution and the interference of confused labels, we design a Bi-level Curriculum learning scheme (BiC). The BiC separately considers the training from the feature learning and de-biasing levels, preserving discriminating representations of different predicates while resisting biased predictions. Results on multiple SGG datasets show that our proposed method AMP-BiC has superior comprehensive performance, demonstrating its effectiveness.

Crop byproducts can be supplemented in livestock feeds to improve the utilization of resources and reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. We explored the mitigation potential of GHG emissions by supplementing crop byproducts in feeds based on a typical intensive dairy farm in China. Results showed that GHG emissions associated with production of forage were significantly decreased by 25.60 % when no GHG emissions were allocated to crop byproducts, and enteric methane emission was significantly decreased by 13.46 % on the basis of CO2 eq, g/kg fat and protein corrected milk. The supplementation did not affect lactation performance, rumen microbiota and microbial enzymes at the gene level. Metabolomics analysis revealed changes in amino acid catabolism of rumen fluid, which were probably responsible for more propionate production. In conclusion, supplementing crop byproducts in feeds can be a potential strategy to reduce GHG emissions of livestock.

The development and optimization of metal-based anticancer drugs with novel cytotoxic mechanisms have emerged as key strategies to overcome chemotherapeutic resistance and side effects. Agents that simultaneously induce ferroptosis and autophagic death have received extensive attention as potential modalities for cancer therapy. However, only a limited set of drugs or treatment modalities can synergistically induce ferroptosis and autophagic tumor cell death. In this work, we designed and synthesized four new cycloplatinated (II) complexes harboring an isoquinoline alkaloid C∧N ligand. On screening the in vitro activity of these agents, we found that Pt-3 exhibited greater selectivity of cytotoxicity, decreased resistance factors, and improved anticancer activity compared to cisplatin. Furthermore, Pt-3, which we demonstrate can initiate potent ferritinophagy-dependent ferroptosis, exhibits less toxic and better therapeutic activity than cisplatin in vivo. Our results identify Pt-3 as a promising candidate or paradigm for further drug development in cancer treatment.

Fuel cells (FCs) have attracted widespread attention as a highly efficient, clean, and renewable energy conversion technology. Proton exchange membrane (PEM), as one of the core components of FCs, plays a crucial role, and a comprehensive summary of its development is essential for promoting rapid progress in the field of sustainable energy. This article provides a comprehensive review of the development status and research trends of PEMs over the past twenty-eight years, based on statistical analysis and data mining techniques. Price, sustainability, stability, and compatibility issues are the main challenges faced by current PEMs used in FCs research. The current research focuses mainly on the characterization, performance optimization, enhancement mechanisms, and applications of PEMs in FCs. This review provides a systematic summary of PEM materials, serving as a valuable reference for the development, application, and promotion of new PEM materials in FCs.

In this study, we investigated the regulatory mechanisms underlying the effects of LPS tolerance on the inflammatory homeostasis of immune cells. LPS priming-induced immune tolerance downregulated cyclooxygenase-2, and lowered the production of prostaglandin-E2 in microglial cells. In addition, LPS tolerance downregulated the expression of suppressor of cytokine signaling 3, and inducible nitric oxide synthase/nitric oxide; suppressed the LPS-mediated induction of tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin (IL)-6, and IL-1; and reduced reactive oxygen species production in microglial cells. LPS stimulation increased the levels of the adaptive response-related proteins heme oxygenase-1 and superoxide dismutase 2, and the levels of heme oxygenase-1 (HO-1) enhanced after LPS priming. Systemic administration of low-dose LPS (0.5 mg/kg) to mice for 4 consecutive days attenuated high-dose LPS (5 mg/kg)-induced inflammatory response, microglial activation, and proinflammatory cytokine expression. Moreover, repeated exposure to low-dose LPS suppressed the recruitment of peripheral monocytes or macrophages to brain regions and downregulated the expression of proinflammatory cytokines. Notably, LPS-induced social avoidance behaviors in mice were mitigated by immune tolerance. In conclusion, immune tolerance may reduce proinflammatory cytokine expression and reactive oxygen species production. Our findings provide insights into the effects of endotoxin tolerance on innate immune cells and social behaviors.

We sequenced and analyzed the complete mitochondrial genome of Lentipes ikeae and explored the phylogenetic relationships among Sicydiinae based on mitochondrial genome sequences. The complete mitochondrial genome sequence of L. ikeae was determined using the Illumina HiSeq X Ten sequencing platform, and the gene structural characteristics and base composition were analyzed. Based on the mitochondrial genome sequences of 28 Sicydiinae species published in GenBank and mitochondrial protein-coding genes (PCGs), Acanthogobius flavimanus (Gobionellinae) was selected as an outgroup to construct phylogenetic trees of Sicydiinae using the maximum likelihood and Bayesian inference methods. The mitochondrial genome of L. ikeae (GenBank number: OP764680) has a total length of 16,498 bp and encodes 13 PCGs, 22 transfer RNA genes, two ribosomal RNA genes, and a D-loop (control) region. Gene rearrangement is not observed. The mitochondrial genome of L. ikeae exhibits an AT preference, with AT skew > 0 and GC skew < 0 across the entire genome. The phylogenetic relationships of Sicydiinae based on 13 mitochondrial PCG sequences are Sicydium + (Stiphodon + (Sicyopus + Lentipes)) + Sicyopterus, indicating that Sicydium, Sicyopterus, Lentipes, and Stiphodon are all monophyletic groups.

Inspired by the reverse thrust generated by fuel injection, micromachines that are self-propelled by bubble ejection are developed, such as microrods, microtubes, and microspheres. However, controlling bubble ejection sites to build micromachines with programmable actuation and further enabling mechanical transmission remain challenging. Here, bubble-propelled mechanical microsystems are constructed by proposing a multimaterial femtosecond laser processing method, consisting of direct laser writing and selective laser metal reduction. The polymer frame of the microsystems is first printed, followed by the deposition of catalytic platinum into the desired local site of the microsystems by laser reduction. With this method, a variety of designable microrotors with selective bubble ejection sites are realized, which enable excellent mechanical transmission systems composed of single and multiple mechanical components, including a coupler, a crank slider, and a crank rocker system. We believe the presented bubble-propelled mechanical microsystems could be extended to applications in microrobotics, microfluidics, and microsensors.

Type VI secretion systems (T6SS) are bacterial macromolecular complexes that secrete effectors into target cells or the extracellular environment, leading to the demise of adjacent cells and providing a survival advantage. Although studies have shown that the T6SS in Pseudomonas aeruginosa is regulated by the Quorum Sensing system and second messenger c-di-GMP, the underlying molecular mechanism remains largely unknown. In this study, we discovered that the c-di-GMP-binding adaptor protein PA0012 has a repressive effect on the expression of the T6SS HSI-I genes in P. aeruginosa PAO1. To probe the mechanism by which PA0012 (renamed TssZ, Type Six Secretion System -associated PilZ protein) regulates the expression of HSI-I genes, we conducted yeast two-hybrid screening and identified HinK, a LasR-type transcriptional regulator, as the binding partner of TssZ. The protein-protein interaction between HinK and TssZ was confirmed through co-immunoprecipitation assays. Further analysis suggested that the HinK-TssZ interaction was weakened at high c-di-GMP concentrations, contrary to the current paradigm wherein c-di-GMP enhances the interaction between PilZ proteins and their partners. Electrophoretic mobility shift assays revealed that the non-c-di-GMP-binding mutant TssZR5A/R9A interacts directly with HinK and prevents it from binding to the promoter of the quorum-sensing regulator pqsR. The functional connection between TssZ and HinK is further supported by observations that TssZ and HinK impact the swarming motility, pyocyanin production, and T6SS-mediated bacterial killing activity of P. aeruginosa in a PqsR-dependent manner. Together, these results unveil a novel regulatory mechanism wherein TssZ functions as an inhibitor that interacts with HinK to control gene expression.

The exceptional performance of graphene has driven the advancement of its preparation techniques and applications. Laser-induced graphene (LIG), as a novel graphene preparation technique, has been applied in various fields. Graphene periodic structures created by the LIG technique exhibit superhydrophobic characteristics and can be used for deicing and anti-icing applications, which are significantly influenced by the laser parameters. The laser surface treatment process was simulated by a finite element software analysis (COMSOL Multiphysics) to optimize the scanning parameter range, and the linear array surface structure was subsequently fabricated by the LIG technique. The generation of graphene was confirmed by Raman spectroscopy and energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy. The periodic linear array structure was observed by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and confocal laser imaging (CLSM). In addition, CLSM testings, contact angle measurements, and delayed icing experiments were systematically performed to investigate the effect of scanning speed on surface hydrophobicity. The results show that high-quality and uniform graphene can be achieved using the laser scanning speed of 125 mm/s. The periodic linear array structures can obviously increase the contact angle and suppress delayed icing. Furthermore, these structures have the enhanced ability of the electric heating deicing, which can reach 100 °C and 240 °C within 15 s and within 60 s under the DC voltage power supply ranging from 3 to 7 V, respectively. These results indicate that the LIG technique can be developed to provide an efficient, economical, and convenient approach for preparing graphene and that the hydrophobic surface array structure based on LIG has considerable potential for deicing and anti-icing applications.

SCOPE: Early diabetic retinopathy (DR) is characterized by chronic inflammation, excessive oxidative stress, and retinal microvascular damage. Syringaresinol (SYR), as a natural polyphenolic compound, has been proved to inhibit many disease progression due to its antiinflammatory and antioxidant properties. The present study focuses on exploring the effect of SYR on hyperglycemia-induced early DR as well as the underlying mechanisms. METHODS AND RESULTS: Wild-type (WT) and nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2)-knockout C57BL/6 mice of type 1 diabetes and high glucose (HG)-induced RF/6A cells are used as in vivo and in vitro models, respectively. This study finds that SYR protects the retinal structure and function in diabetic mice and reduces the permeability and apoptosis of HG-treated RF/6A cells. Meanwhile, SYR distinctly mitigates inflammation and oxidative stress in vivo and vitro. The retinal microvascular damages are suppressed by SYR via downregulating hypoxia-inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α)/vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) pathway. Whereas, SYR-provided protective effects are diminished in Nrf2-knockout mice, indicating that SYR improves DR progression by activating Nrf2. Similarly, SYR cannot exert protective effects against HG-induced oxidative stress and endothelial injury in small interfering RNA (siRNA)-Nrf2-transfected RF/6A cells. CONCLUSION: In summary, SYR suppresses oxidative stress via activating Nrf2 antioxidant pathway, which ameliorates retinal microvascular damage by downregulating HIF-1α/VEGF, thereby alleviating early DR progression.
